A prop trading funded account is usually an evaluation that costs about $30 to $300 upfront. Prices were checked on ****. Larger challenges, instant funding and premium programs can cost $500 to more than $1,000.

The fee usually pays for an evaluation or challenge, not the advertised capital. A "$50,000 funded account" generally gives you access to a simulated account with set buying power and loss limits. It does not mean that $50,000 is deposited into your bank account.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get Funded?

A low-cost evaluation is often the cheapest route if you pass quickly. The entry fee is not always the total cost, though. Monthly subscriptions, activation fees and resets can change the calculation.

The supplied Topstep pricing shows two 50K paths:

  • Standard path: $49 per month, plus a $149 activation fee after passing
  • No Activation Fee path: $95 per month, with no activation fee after passing

If you pass in one month:

  • Standard path: $49 + $149 = $198
  • No Activation Fee path: $95

The Standard path can cost less over several months because its monthly fee is lower.

Time to pass Standard path No Activation Fee path
One month $198 $95
Two months $247 $190
Three months $296 $285
Four months $345 $380

These figures exclude tax, trading costs and resets.

What Fees Should You Include in the Real Cost?

The real cost can include the evaluation fee, monthly charges, activation, resets, trading costs and taxes.

1. Evaluation or Challenge Fee

This is the first payment for access to the trading rules and simulated evaluation. Futures firms often charge a monthly subscription. Many forex and CFD firms charge a one-time challenge fee.

FundedNext's U.S. CFD pricing lists one-time fees of $49.99 for a 6K Stellar 2-Step account, $269.99 for a 50K account and $529.99 for a 100K account.

2. Monthly Subscription

Some futures evaluations renew every 30 days until you pass or cancel. Topstep says its Trading Combine remains active until the trader earns an Express Funded Account or cancels the subscription.

A low monthly fee becomes more expensive when it takes several months to pass.

3. Activation Fee After Passing

Some firms charge another fee when you qualify.

Topstep's Standard path lists a $149 one-time activation fee for each Express Funded Account. Its No Activation Fee path does not charge this fee.

4. Reset Fees

A reset lets you restart a failed evaluation without purchasing a new account. The price depends on the firm and account size.

Topstep's reset fees match the monthly subscription price for the selected account size.

5. Trading Commissions and Market Data

Futures traders may also pay commissions, exchange fees and optional market-data charges.

Topstep lists example round-turn costs of $3.78 for one ES contract and $1.22 for one MES contract on its TopstepX platform. Level 1 market data is included, while Level 2 data is listed at $38 per month.

6. Tax and Currency Charges

Sales tax may be added at checkout, depending on your location. International firms may charge in euros or another currency, so the final amount in U.S. dollars can differ from the displayed price.

Is a Funded Account Really Free After You Pass?

No. Passing the evaluation does not remove every possible cost.

After passing, you may still face:

  • Trading commissions
  • Market-data fees
  • Payout requirements
  • Minimum trading days
  • Profit splits
  • Account-specific loss limits
  • Reactivation fees if you breach the account

The funded stage may also remain simulated. Topstep describes its Express Funded Account as a simulated funded-level account. FTMO describes its accounts as simulated trading accounts where traders may receive rewards based on performance.

How Much Money Should You Budget?

For one attempt, budget roughly:

  • $50 to $150 for a low-cost futures evaluation
  • $50 to $300 for a smaller forex or CFD challenge
  • $200 to $600 for many 50K to 100K programs
  • $500 to $1,000 or more for larger challenges, instant access or multiple attempts

Before choosing a program, compare the maximum loss limit, trailing drawdown, monthly fee, activation fee, reset price and payout rules. The headline account size is only one part of the offer. A $50,000 account with a $2,000 loss limit may provide less usable risk capital than the headline figure suggests.

For most traders, the first payment will be around $50 to $300, but the total path to a payout can cost more if the evaluation renews, you need resets or the firm charges an activation fee.
